The Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT) has three stations: push ups, sit ups, and a 2.4 km run. Each station is scored by age group, for a total of 100 points.
To pass you need at least 51 points, with at least 1 point in every station.
This page has a calculator, the current scoring and awards, and tips to push your score up.
Calculator
To work out your score, use the ippt.yctay.com calculator. Enter your age, reps, and run timing, and it gives your points and award.
If you're exempted from any of the stations, use the official IPPT scoring calculator on NS.SG instead, as it handles the adjusted scoring.
Scores and awards
Your total is out of 100. The award bands:
| Award | Points | NSmen incentive |
|---|---|---|
| Fail | below 51 | none |
| Pass | 51 to 60 | none |
| Pass with incentive | 61 to 74 | $200 |
| Silver | 75 to 84 | $300 |
| Gold | 85 to 100 | $500 |
- You must score at least 1 point in each station to pass, even if your total is already above 51.
- The same amounts apply to NSFs (in their unit window), NSmen, and Regulars.
- No money during training. The pre-enlistment IPPT, the BMT IPPT, and any IPPT you take while in SCS or OCS don't pay out. They're training tests. You only become eligible once you're posted to your unit after BMT (and after command school, if you go).
- You only get one award payout per IPPT window. Retake and score higher, and your incentive is topped up to the higher award.
- Some combat vocations are held to a higher gold standard. Check the official site for your exact requirement.
Incentive amounts have been in place since 2014. Last verified: May 2026. Sources: OneNS IPPT awards and incentives and MINDEF (Feb 2014).
How to score gold
The run is worth the most, so that is where golds are won and lost. For a quick overview, watch How to get gold for IPPT.
Prioritise the 2.4 km run
- The run is 50 of the 100 points, more than push ups and sit ups combined.
- Shaving time off the run is usually the fastest way to jump from pass to silver, or silver to gold.
- Train it 2 to 3 times a week. Mix interval runs for speed with one longer steady run for endurance.
Push ups and sit ups
- Only counted reps score. Bad-form reps get waved off, so train the correct form, not just the number.
- Push ups: lock your arms out at the top, chest near the ground at the bottom.
- Sit ups: elbows must touch the knees, then shoulder blades back down each rep.
- A few sets every day builds your reps fast over a couple of weeks.
- Unsure of the counting standard? Watch CNA's push up form demo, or see the official IPPT stations guide.
Plan your timing
- Book your IPPT early in your window, not at the last minute. This leaves room for free retakes if you miss the award you wanted.
- Warm up properly before the run. A cold start costs you seconds.
IPT and RT
If you don't pass, or you want help training up, you may be placed on one of these.
IPT (IPPT Preparatory Training)
- For those who want help passing.
- Completing the full IPT cycle counts as fulfilling your IPPT obligation for that window, even if you don't pass the test at the end.
RT (Remedial Training)
- For NSmen who don't take or pass their IPPT in the window.
- A fixed number of sessions you must clock, bookable through the NS portal.
Either way the move is the same: clear it early so it doesn't pile up near your window closing.
Exemptions and partial tests
- If you're medically excused a station (for example your PES status or an injury), you take a modified test, and your pass mark and scoring are adjusted.
- Use the official IPPT scoring calculator on NS.SG to work out your standard if you're exempted any station.
Common questions
What is the IPPT window?
For NSmen it runs birthday to birthday. For NSFs it's the test window your unit gives you.
What happens if I fail?
No award, and you'll likely be put on RT (NSmen) or a retest and IPT (NSFs). There's no fine for failing as long as you fulfil your sessions. For pre-enlistees, nothing happens if you fail. You can just sign up for another attempt.
How many tries do I get for the pre-enlistee IPPT?
Unlimited, as long as you still have enough time before enlistment to book another slot. Take it as many times as you can fit in.
Why bother passing the pre-enlistee IPPT?
If you're PES A or B1 and score 61 or more (with at least 1 point per station), you skip the 8-week Physical Training Phase (PTP). That cuts about 2 months off your full-time NS, so it's well worth clearing before you enlist.
Do I get the incentive money during BMT or command school?
No. The pre-enlistment IPPT, the BMT IPPT, and IPPT during SCS or OCS are training tests and don't pay out. You're eligible once you're posted to your unit.
Can I retake for a higher award?
Yes. Take it as many times as your window allows. Your incentive tops up to your best result.
Which station matters most?
The run. It's half your score.
