Best Canteen Dishes

Canteens change a lot. Stalls close, aunties move, prices go up, and some camps don't let trainees go canteen whenever they want. Treat this as a "try if you're there" list, not a guarantee.

Also, if you're still a recruit, canteen is a privilege. Don't assume you can skip cookhouse just because you saw good reviews online.

  • Seletar Camp – Lionscope Sandwich
  • Selarang Camp – Nasi Lemak
  • Pasir Laba Camp – “FBO” Sambal Fried Rice
  • Sembawang Camp – 50¢ Prata
  • Nee Soon Camp – Wantan Mee
  • Changi Naval Base – Laksa
  • Ayer Rajah Camp – Malay Fried Chicken Wing
  • Sungei Gedong Camp – Black Pepper Chicken Chop

Camps people keep mentioning

Old r/NationalServiceSG canteen threads keep bringing up Pasir Laba Camp, Gombak, Nee Soon, Kranji, and Depot Road/CMPB when talking about better canteens. The exact stall matters more than the camp name though.

For pricing, expect drinks to be cheaper than full meals, obviously. Full meals are usually a few dollars, but eating canteen every day adds up fast. If you're trying to save money, cookhouse is still the boring answer.

How to use canteen properly

  • Bring small notes or use whatever payment method your camp canteen accepts.
  • Don't take forever ordering when there is a queue behind you.
  • If your section is moving as a group, buy something quick.
  • Don't make your commanders regret giving canteen break.
  • If the cookhouse food is acceptable that day, just eat cookhouse and save the money.
