TL;DR
- Tattoos are allowed in the SAF. Having them does not affect your PES status
- They must not be visible when you are in No.4. Sleeves cover your arms, so arms are the easy case

Before enlistment
The pre-enlistment form asks if you have tattoos, and the CMPB medical checkup asks again during registration, alongside allergies and medical history. Answer honestly.
Having tattoos does not change your PES status and it does not stop you from being enlisted. It is just recorded.
What about getting one after your checkup but before enlistment? People do ask this. There is no public rule that says you must re-declare, but if it becomes visible in any uniform or PT kit later, commanders will see it anyway. Hiding information you could have just declared is worse than the tattoo itself.
Where tattoos can be
The practical line is simple: not visible in No.4.
- Arms: covered by sleeves in No.4, so generally fine
- Back, chest, torso: covered, the safest areas
- Legs: No.4 trousers cover them, but remember PT kit and shorts exist. Thigh and calf tattoos will show
- Hands, forearms, neck, face: visible in most clothing. Avoid, or expect problems
Also note there is no public SAF document spelling out exact size limits or placement rules. The guidance above is the consistent picture from people who have served through it, not from an official PDF.
Getting a tattoo while serving
This is where people get charged, not for having tattoos, but for getting them badly.
- Ask your superior first. This is the single most important thing
- New tattoos that are visible in No.4 are not allowed
- Command school and courses are stricter. Check before doing anything during block leave
- Some courses reportedly screen for tattoos directly. There are accounts of an RP course where everyone strips and checks each other, and any tattoo drops you from the course
For regulars there is a formal approval process. For NSFs, the safest answer is to wait until after ORD. Two years is short, your tattoo artist is not going anywhere.
Vocations, sign-on, and the Home Team
- SPF: visible tattoos are not allowed, and SPF or SPS sign-on applications include a tattoo declaration. Multiple applicants have been told visible tattoos disqualify them
- SCDF: stricter than SAF, though the exact rules are not published. Assume visible is a problem and check with them directly
- MP, NDU, and other selection-heavy vocations: community reports say visible tattoos can count against you during selection. Not an official rule, just what people have experienced
So if you are set on uniformed services later, think very carefully before getting anything a short-sleeve shirt cannot hide.
After ORD and NSmen
No rules. You are a civilian, and NSmen with tattoos still get called up for reservist like everyone else.
The one exception is if you become a regular or sign on with the SAF, SPF, or SCDF afterwards. Then their in-service rules apply again.
Practical tips
- Declare honestly at the CMPB checkup. The form asks, and lying on a declaration is worse than any tattoo
- If you must get inked during NS, ask first and keep it covered by No.4
- Skip offensive or vulgar designs. That is a hard line everywhere
- If you plan to sign on with SPF or SCDF, keep everything under a t-shirt
- When in doubt, ask your superior before the tattoo appointment, not after
